About

Hi,

My name is Celine Lazarus and I created this website when I was a third-year student at the University of Georgia’s College of Veterinary Medicine.

I had found that there needs to be a better system to connect disabled animals online because I had the hardest time looking for a precious wheelchair dog. Therefore, I madeĀ www.disabledanimal.com
This is a classification system to where people can list their animals for free and it is completely dedicated to disabilities. If you do, please take the time to list your wonderful disabled animals on the automated site. I was so frustrated at petfinder because you can’t classify all of them as “special needs” and expect people to sort through 1,000 + hits. You have full control over the listings just like in Petfinder.
Please help me to spread the word! Of course, please crosspost with other venues so adoptable animals will find a home.
Thank you,
Celine Lazarus, DVM
Meet my furbabies! Kona is a chihuahua who had a stroke at the age of three in his cerebellum. He lost all control of balance from it. Abby is an Italian Greyhound that I rescued who loves to smile.

  1. Congrats Celine on some very good thinking. This is an admirable service you are providing. As a huge supporter of animal adoption, I truly applaud your efforts. I will do what I can to help you promote this site. Thank you for your service to animals, and best wishes. Amelia

  2. Good idea…great job! I have registered and will pass along to other rescuers.

  3. Great idea, Celine! I’m interested in speaking with you more about this for a story I’m writing for a national magazine. How can I get in touch with you?

Celine- thank you for doing this. Seniors and special needs require many more advocates. If people only knew the love and devotion from these animals-they are my heart! I will go to the ends of the earth for them.

  6. You are amazing Celine!
There are many pets with needs. This site wlil become a great site and many pets will be helped because you cared enough to do something, thank you!

  7. I do the emails for Missaukee Humane. I forwarded your information and website to a friend who writes a well known blog and for USA Today. She is passing your info to the Tripawds people.

You may have a tiger by the tail here!

  8. Received your comment on my youtube video. Your site is now linked to my wheelchair site smarterce.com/pet

  9. This is a wonderful idea. For Hope only takes in dogs that are sick, injured, disabled and need further medical, badly abused and or neglected. We chose this so other rescues would not have a foster spot filled with a dog requiring more time. Hopefully they will be able to help more. This site is great for us and anyone willing to help these wonderful dogs. Thank you for doing this, For Hope will use it often and will spread the word. It will be a link on our website and facebook.

I have just one question: Not all the dogs we get are disabled, some have illnesses that are life long or have gone thru some treatments such as Heartworm that require a life of watching for any side effects or special care. What are your requirements to post a dog?

Thank You again. Great job and 3 paws up.

  10. Celine,
You are awesome!! What a great idea. I am the proud Mom of a disabled dog. I love your logo…have you thought of making t-shirts? I would buy one : )

  11. Dear Celine,

This is wonderful resource that we would like to co-promote with you on our website and on our social networks. HandicappedPets.com provides products, services and support for elderly, disabled and injured pets. Our signature product is the Walkin’ Wheels dog wheelchair that fully adjusts to accommodate all sizes of dogs and all types of rear leg mobility problems.

We receive numerous requests for assistance in placing handicapped pets in new homes, and we would welcome the opportunity to be able to refer people to your listings here. Congratulations and best wishes on the website!

Please e-mail me at your convenience, so we can coordinate efforts.

    Sincerely,
    Lisa-Marie

  12. Celine,
thank you for setting up this site and letting us know about it.
question for you, regarding the site. It would be great to have a way to check off each individual disability for a dog, For example Blind, Diabetic, senior
as if someone is looking for a blind dog and they are under senior the may be missed.
    Just an idea.

    • Hi Annie,

I can’t figure out a way to do that but you can go back into your dashboard on the top right and then you can see your listings. Click on the pencil by their name to edit and you should be able to select multiple. I’m going to have to look into this and try to make that possible :)

      Thanks!

  13. Hello Celine

I’m Miki. I’m a R+ dog training instructor and blind dog trainer, and live with blind doxie in Japan.

This web site is wonderful. Your idea is great :)

I want to help disabled dog too. I give information about blind dog training via my website and YouTube channel because there is little information about it. Those might help blind dog and their adopter.

Please check those out and add blog roll, if you’d like.

    Thank you.

Thank you for your reply and adding my website on your blog roll!

I knew here via tweet of @handicappedpets. There isn’t website like this in Japan because adoption of dogs is still less common :(

I followed your twitter account (my twitter account is @nonochalant).

        Thank you

        Miki :)

    Celine,

This website is such a great idea and badly needed. You given all of these animals tons of hope and the website is interesting to read thru. A very good friend passed on to me and have listed one of my rescues (GiGI) on site. A great big thank you goes out to you!

  15. Hi Celine:
Thanks so much for all you are doing. I have a request. In the future, could you provide a search for location and type of pet (in other words, if I am looking for a small dog in Florida, how would I do that?). I look forward to working with you in your efforts.
    Sincerely,

    • Hello!

Thank you so much for your interest in this website! There is a search bar on the right side where you can type in Florida. These animals are categorized by disability instead of size because it is really what this website is about. However, you will be able to see the pictures of the animals in your state and see how large they are :) I hope that helps!
